That Was Then This Is Now: The Life (Mother’s Day) - Matthew 5:17-20 Every life comes as a gift and every life holds a deep longing for fulfillment. The fulfilled life is one that fully becomes what they were created to be. Jesus taught such a life is not determined by external conformity but by a transformation of the soul.

Extreme Makeover-Life Edition: Staying on Course / Finishing Well Nehemiah 8,13 One of the greatest pitfalls of success is complacency. When we’ve experienced a measure of success it is tempting to rest on our past and lose sight of our future. But God’s vision for our lives is eternal and while we are still on this earth there will always be room to grow and expand with God. The Big Idea: Under Nehemiah’s leadership the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem was completed. But God had a greater purpose. He wasn’t as interested in rebuilding walls as he was in rebuilding His people.

The Big Idea: Nehemiah had to deal with all kinds of distractions. He had to deal with outside opposition, internal conflicts and personal attacks. As he dealt with each of these his vision and resolve grew even stronger. Knowing how to handle discouragement and distractions is key for living out our calling.

Patching up minor character flaws or making little behavioral adjustments tend to fail because they don’t see the bigger picture. What’s needed is a personal vision of what God can do in and through our lives. The Big Idea: Nehemiah was moved by a need. Tom Eggum: Hope 4 Kids International Impacting the lives of kids around the world has never been a job for Tom Eggum; it has been a lifestyle. Thirty years ago, Tom sat in a college classroom reading about the struggles in the Soviet Union who suffered silently behind the Iron Curtain. Tom took matters into his own hands and began to smuggle suitcases full of aid into the Soviet Union. He had eight successful trips into the Soviet Union until 1981 when he was caught, arrested and blacklisted by the KGB. He had his visa revoked and was forbidden to enter the Soviet Union for five years. Instead of standing on the sidelines, he took six trips into China. He brought medicine, vitamins, antibiotics, clothes and shoes. From these life-altering experiences, he founded Hope 4 Kids International. Currently, Hope 4 Kids International has been in over 94 countries bringing hope and necessary care to kids.

"That Whoever Would Believe...", this weekend's study, continues our series on John 3:16 looking at the question, What does it mean to believe?

God So Loved-Part 1: John 3:16 What's It Really Mean? The most familiar sentence in the Bible begins, "God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son..." But what do the words really mean? Does God really care about my hurt? If God is so loving, why does he allow such pain? Why doesn't he do something about it? "God So Loved...", this weekend's study, begins a new series, "John 3:16, What's It Really Mean?", with a look at how God's love can heal a hurting world.

Breaking the Barrier: Breaking the Barrier of Small Caught up in our day-to-day routine we easily lose sight of what truly matters. Schedules, errands and appointments replace relationships. Details and deadlines get in the way of time spent with people. And the urgent distracts us from the eternal. These are all symptoms of "Small-Minded" living. God has given us a bigger vision, a higher calling and a far more meaningful way of life. But to live it, we'll have to break through our small-minded thinking. "Breaking The Barrier Of Small", this weekend's study, concludes our series, "Breaking Barriers and Living Beyond", getting God's perspective on life, relationships and ministry.

Breaking the Barrier: Breaking the Barrier of Fear The promise of Jesus is the promise of life— a life freed by forgiveness, a life transformed by grace, life as God intended it to be lived. That's good news and it's worth sharing. But many of us don't share our faith because of our own insecurities and fears. "Breaking The Barrier Of Fear", this weekend's study, continues our series, "Breaking Barriers and Living Beyond" as we look at the best way to share our faith by sharing our life's story.

Simple Faith - Simply Share As you read the accounts of Jesus' life one thing stands out above everything else— his love for people. Though his teachings were powerful, he wasn't just an educator. When he encountered people who were hurting, broken, lonely and struggling with real-life issues he accepted them. He forgave them. He loved them. And, after he had paid the ultimate price, he gathered his followers together and told them to pass it on— share that message of love, acceptance and forgiveness. "Simply Share", this weekend's study, concludes our "Simple Faith" series looking at how the message of God’s love and grace can be shared, not just with words, but through our lives.

Simple Faith - Simply Serve There seems to be no end of "how to" books designed to help us make more, earn more or get more out of life. Very few, if any, give us pointers on how to give more, share more or serve more. The teachings of Jesus run counter to this approach to life. Jesus said, "The greatest among you will be your servant." and "It is more blessed to give than to receive." The thing that makes Jesus' teaching so powerful is that he didn't just talk about giving and serving, he did it! "Simply Serve", this weekend's study, continues our "Simple Faith" series looking at how to be better at loving by getting better at serving.

Simple Faith - Simply Care Many people begin the New Year with a resolution to pay more attention to their spiritual growth and development. That usually means a resolve to go to church, read the Bible, or spend more "quiet time" with God. All of these activities are commendable, even vital for nurturing your faith but they'll be incomplete if they don't translate into life and relationship transformation. In other words, "People don't care how much you know, they want to know how much you care." "Simply Care", this weekend's study, continues our "Simple Faith" series looking at how growth happens best in the contest of a caring community.

Simple Faith - Simply Love Clearing away all of the religious clutter and sanctimonious double-talk of his time Jesus simplified his message with a straight-forward command: "Love God with all of your being and love your neighbor as yourself." Incredibly simple, incredibly profound, because the type of love that Jesus taught was far different and far more penetrating than what passes for love in our culture. "Simply Love", this weekend's study, continues our "Simple Faith" series looking at how nurturing our love for God enables us to more deeply love others.

Getting Christmas Right: Are You Living? The central message of the Christmas story is that God, in Jesus, "became flesh and lived among us." As absurd as that might sound to some, it's the assertion of Scripture that Christ came, "that they may have life, and have it to the full." That presents us with the question, "Am I living that type of life, am I experiencing life in its fullest?" "Are You Living?", this weekend's study, continues our Christmas series, "Getting Christmas Right", with a look at the difference between life on our terms and the life that God has promised.

Precarious Abundance When Jesus taught about the "Kingdom of God" he challenged his listeners in very big ways to represent what God intended in the Law. There are many areas of the Law that address the proper use of resources to sustain human needs. We are urged to not hoard what God has blessed us with. This week's message, "Precarious Abundance", reflects on the meaning of Jesus' words and how a few lives at Northgate have recently been impacted by putting our faith into action.

Faith in Action Part 3: Think Big But Start Small It is sometimes overwhelming when we look at the needs around us. "The needs are so great," we think, "and I have so little to offer. What difference can I possibly make?" and because we can't do the BIG thing we end up doing NOTHING. Jesus often took small stuff and did great things with it. He fed thousands with a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish. He taught his followers to be "faithful with little." and he used the example of a mustard seed to describe how a little faith can have a huge impact. "Think Big But Start Small", continues our "Faith In Action" series as we learn how to look at how God can take what little we have to offer and use it to do great things.

Faith in Action Part 2: Perspective Seeing With God's Eyes We all have a lens through which we look at the world. Our "lens" influences how we see the people around us. It is colored by certain experiences, assumptions and judgments that we make on a regular basis. When Jesus looked at people he often saw them in a way that was quite different from the way others did. He always seemed to see with eyes of compassion. Faith in Action Part 1: Detours, Delays and God's Direction Nobody likes detours. Detours send you out of your way, they put you on an unfamiliar route, they interrupt your schedule and they always take longer than the way you'd planned to go. We don't like detours in our driving and we don't like detours in our lives. But what if life's detours had a purpose? What if we looked at life's interruptions as opportunities? What if God were using the alternate routes that our lives sometimes take to point us in the direction that he wants us to go? These are the thoughts we're going to explore in this study,"Detours, Delays and God's Direction ", as Pastor Ken begin a new four week series, "Putting Our Faith Into Action."

What Is Best Choices. We make them every day and we most often opt for what we deem is "best". How do we determine what the "best" is? We go by standards we have adopted for ourselves influenced by the culture and mindset around us. As is typical when reading what God has revealed in the Bible, we are challenged about our held notions. God, very often, places a very high value on that which we would not be naturally inclined to esteem. We will hear and learn "What is Best", according to God, in Pastor Jeff's message this week.

It was about family, community and belonging. It was about her heart's desire for love, comfort and safety. We live in a world that often leaves us with a longing for something more. It's where we live, but on a very deep level we sense it's not really "home". Missing the Mark-Part 2: Escaping Snares We often say or hear "I'm hooked on _____" (fill in the blank). Missing the Mark-Part 1: Evasive Target The church has had a shaky history of either overemphasizing or glossing over the topic of sin (with all its immediate and eternal consequences). The subject touches a nerve in every human being because we all suffer the malady of serving only ourselves and not really caring about God’s desires or the needs of others. Why are we afflicted in such a way? If we are serious about reading and learning what God has revealed in the bible, we cannot avoid being confronted with this universal problem. Life on the Vine-Part 5: Becoming Faithful in a Throw-away Culture We live in what has often been called a "disposable society". We have disposable plates, knives and forks, disposable razors, cameras and contact lenses. Even big expense items like computers can, within three short years, become more expensive to repair than to replace. This disposable mentality is not limited to material goods. Our jobs, our friendships, even marriages are sometimes discarded because they've outlasted their usefulness or no longer please us. Life On The Vine-Part 4: Becoming Good "Good" is a word that we use with some ambivalence. If a movie was "good", that usually means it was just "O.K." Good, not great. If someone is too "good" we deride them for being, "self-righteous" or "goody-goody". Yet we long for the "good life", we remind our children to "be good", and someone who is always there for us we consider a "good friend". It could easily be argued that we are often so busy in our pursuits, that we're missing out on the happiness. The pace of our lives can actually keep us from enjoying life. While happiness is most often dictated by our circumstances, Jesus spoke of character qualities that are far more substantial. They are qualities that sustain and outlast any circumstance. Dealing with Doubt-Part 3: How Can There Be a Loving God? One question that overlaps every generation and culture is the one that interrogates the notion that God is loving. It's based on the pervasive presence of evil, suffering and death. This form of doubt is possibly the most readily used attack that the Bible's revelation of a caring God is erroneous. Those who use this appear to have a reasonable complaint: "Why doesn't God use His power to stop the evil, suffering, pain and death?" As we look at what the bible says about the relationship between knowledge and faith, we are challenged with the fact that our perspective can be distorted and that there are some bigger things to consider. Dealing with Doubt-Part 1: What Are We Doing Here? The Rock group Kansas recorded a popular song in the late 1970s called Dust In the Wind. From the lyrics we can hear: Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea. All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see. Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind. When Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, he often concluded similar thoughts. He was pondering purpose. Every human being ponders purpose. We see this in common human desire for authority, security, fulfillment and destiny. In this message, we'll identify with Solomon's thoughts as we ask the question What Are We Doing Here? in continuing our current series Dealing With Doubt.
